Social Programme
Despite the fact that all the IVR Congresses are scientific events in the first place, it is desirable for everyone to relax, know better Poland, and other participants. Especially for this purpose some social events have been prepared. Participation in all of them is included in the congress' fee.
All participants and their accompanying person(s) are free to decide which one they are interested in.
Excursions
Wawel Castle and Collegium Maius
Wawel Castle is a unique fortress which used to serve as headquarters of all Polish kings in the time when Krakow was a capital of Poland. Now, it is a museum containing interesting collection of artifacts formerly being a part of kings' treasures. And the place where many of Polish rulers and persons important for the country history were buried.
Collegium Maius is the oldest building of Jagiellonian University (which was founded in 1364). It is also a museum where many documents and artifact linked with university's famous scholars are exhibited.
Time of excursions: during the Congress' duration
Duration: about two hours each
Due to limits imposed on the number of visitors, all participants will be equipped with tickets and should plan detailed schedule of touring on their own. All information will be available at the reception desks since the first day of the congress.
Auschwitz Death Camp and Wieliczka Salt Mine
Auschwitz Death Camp is the most well known cemetery and place of genocide in the world. About 1 million people from almost all of Europe lost their life there. The trip will cover all distinctive points of this grim location as well as detailed history of the camp.
Since this excursion could be a rather sad experience it is not an advisable option for more sensitive participants to choose.
Wieliczka Salt Mine has been worked for 900 years. Since the 18th century it has become a huge tourist attraction as the subterranean world of labyrinthine passages, giant caves, underground lakes and chapels with sculptures in crystalline salt and rich ornamentation carved in the salt rock. It contains the world's biggest museum of mining and a sanatorium located 210 m under the surface.
Since 1978 the Wieliczka Salt Mine is on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list.

Duration: about four hours

Concerts
Concerts will take place at local theaters on August 4, 2007 (Saturday) and August 5, 2007 (Sunday) at 20:00.
